eConsult


 

What is an eConsult?

A secure email messaging system that uses the Ontario Telemedicine Network (OTN) to connect primary care providers with specialists.

 

The eHealth Centre of Excellence provides support, sign up, and in-person coaching for primary care providers.

 

How does it work? 

  • Physicians and nurse practitioners send a secure email message to a specialist or a specialty group
  • May request treatment options, ask for advice or query if a referral is needed
  • Receive advice quickly and securely… in less than 3 days on average  
  • Ability to have back and forth discussion or clarification

What are the benefits? 

  • Timely access to experience-based specialist knowledge
  • Reduced patient anxiety related to delayed treatment
  • Decreased patient travel
  • Reduced number of unnecessary /inappropriate referrals
  • Improved knowledge sharing between clinicians
  • Improved PCP confidence in the plan of care

Where can I find billing information?

  • Primary Care Providers may bill OHIP K738($16/consult) as per the rules in the Schedule of Benefits
  • Specialists may bill an hourly rate of $200/hr pro-rated to the number of minutes required to answer the question (OHIP billing guide)
